Women's Retreat 2010

On April 16-18 our district held the annual Womens' Retreat again at Calvary Chapel Conference Center in Murrieta Hot Springs. In this beautiful and relaxing setting, we truly were refreshed.
Winding pathways to walk, visit, pray, meditate...

gently, bubbling springs...
the hot springs to enjoy each evening...
delicious meals prepared and elegantly served, lovely centerpieces that graced our tables...

and creative table favors crafted for our enjoyment.

Those were just a few of the many blessings that came our way as we joined together in this upper room- from two different states and several different congregations-one district, gathered to hear about "Living Inside Out."

Our retreat speaker, Cheryl, shared from several biblical texts. On Friday evening, she shared from Genesis chapter 1-3 and asked us to be open and free, to look inside of ourselves and see who we really are and allow the creator God to make us into the kind of woman He wants us to be.

On Saturday, Cheryl challenged us in the morning session to live inside out within our inner circle, those that we are closest to-- our family, our friends and the family of God. She used the story of Naomi and Ruth: Naomi, who was "empty" and bitter against God for all the pain and hardship she had endured, and how Ruth "poured" herself into Naomi's life and turned her focus toward God, who then could fill Naomi's life with joy again. In the evening session, we learned from the life of Jonah how to reach beyond our comfort zone and live inside out in the outer circle: our acquaintances and all those people that God puts in our path or lays on our heart.

Dorothy led the women in worship and praise, admonishing us to fix our eyes on Jesus, and to present our lives to God to be made into a holy, living sanctuary.

We enjoyed the beautiful flowers everywhere...

the soothing waters, and the quiet of a small chapel.

On Sunday morning, we were challenged by our speaker to live way outside the box! From James 1 we heard about being willing to be used by God, to dare to be open before God and do whatever He asks of us in the coming year.

On Saturday evening, we enjoyed a time of laughter and fun, hosted by Sharon.

Each church group presented a skit, both thought-provoking and funny.

A reminder that we are all aging...

and that we need to "cast all our cares on Jesus!"

The special treat on Sunday morning was a concert performed by the Christian family.

Following God's leading, this teacher-turned mom- has adopted 17 children from all over the world. She led her family in testimony though songs and scripture.

Each child radiated the joy of Lord!

The family's motto: "this is what we do best--love the babies, the children, and anybody else who needs us!"

This woman and her husband are living examples of our theme for the weekend, Living Inside Out!

"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." (Galatians 2:20)

Last weekend our annual district Women's Retreat was held. Our theme this year was "Endurance." A record number of women attended this year's event which was held at the beautiful Calvary Chapel Conference Center in Murrieta, CA. Not only did we enjoy a time of spiritual refreshment and renewal, we also enjoyed making new friends and renewing old aquaintances. Laughter and tears bonded us together as sisters in Christ. It was a great weekend!

In this beautiful and relaxing setting, we were daily challenged from God's Word. In the Friday evening session, Kelly spoke to us about "God's Enduring Love." (1John 4:7-8) She reminded us about the vastness of God's love--that He loved us even before we repented of our sins; that God authors love--for He is love! She reminded us repeatedly that we can do nothing to deserve God's enduring love, we just need to receive it. And, as believers in Jesus, we are to be committed to Jesus, God's dear Son, and only then will we truly begin to know how to love. On Saturday morning, Kelly shared with us about "The Enduring Word." She told us of the importance of knowing God through His Word. The Bible--God's enduring Word-- is the mind of God on printed pages! God desires for us to know Him, to fellowship with Him, to comfort us, to teach us through His Word. Drawing near to God is not an option for the believer, it is a necessity--a discipline! We should pattern our life after that of Mary, one of an unspoken word--just sitting at Jesus' feet and listening and learning from Him.

On Saturday evening, Kelly talked about "Enduring Prayer." In this moving session, she led the entire group in a concert of prayer. Psalm 27:8 says, "My heart has heard you say, 'Come and talk with me.' And my heart responds, 'Lord, I am coming.' "

As Kelly recited the names of God-- written on a long scroll-- God began to reveal to us his holy attributes, and we responded in praise and adoration. But as we were led into the very presence of a Holy God, we bowed in humility and repentance and unworthiness. Not only did we confess our personal sins, but those of our families and our nation. We closed our time of prayer together in thanksgiving for what God has done for us through redemption, and also in interceding for those who are still resisting God's saving grace.In our final session, on Sunday morning, Kelly spoke from Hebrews 11:1 on "Enduring Faith." She told of the saints of old who walked faithfully with God regardless of the consequences. Once again, we were reminded that being convinced of who God is, helps us walk in faith through the good times and the bad. All the saints of old had two things in common: they knew the Word of God, and they knew the God of the Word!

Kelly challenged us:

to know Jesus--to listen to Him, to abide in Him
to be desperate for the living God, to be passionate about prayer
to stop dwelling on the past--to start walking by faith because of what Jesus has done for us
to live in the power of God's grace--to REJOICE!

Part of the Master's Plan

God has a wonderful plan for each person's life! Jim and Marilyn (Calvary) have known John since he was a high school student in Africa. His father and mother were members of the tribe that the Ericksons worked with for many years. God blessed John and his family with a good education. Several years ago, John graduated from Seminary in Africa and desired to pursue further education. He was chosen by his church synod overseas to come to the USA for a higher degree. In June, he recieved his Master's degree.

A Huge Step of Faith

Immanuel Church has taken a huge step of faith! They are raising funds for a well project in Africa. This small group of dedicated people have been praying and planning and raising money for the past many months and God is blessing and using them.

Because of his past experience in working with these types of projects, Jim was called on to give advice and insight.
Pastor Steve and Pastor Jim were collegues in Africa and continue to share their love for the peoples of those countries, and their desire to see these nations develop both spiritually and economically.
Immanuel Church has appreciated the help and concern of Pastor John as he has shared his heart for his homeland. His love for the Lord and the Word of God have strengthened the hearts of his fellow church members at Immanuel. We wish him God's blessings as he returns home.

Pastor Henry, visitation pastor at Calvary CC, just celebrated his 89th birthday. Praise God for the many lives that have been touched by this godly man and his precious wife Shirley, and for the many years of ministry God has blessed them with! And no, he does not plan to retire any time soon!

Memorial Day weekend visitors

On Memorial Day weekend, several of the youth group members from Living Word made the long journey to Fullerton for their annual "outing." The group was a bit smaller this year, but they all had fun--in spite of the cooler, rainy weather they encountered in southern California!

On Sunday morning, the group joined the worshippers at Calvary. They presented a skit for the audience about friendship and practicing the love of Jesus to others that come into your life. The acting was superb and the message of the skit was loud and clear!
They also shared a song with the group. Great job, kids! CalvaryCC is already looking forward to the next visit from Living Word.

District Meeting 2008

On the weekend of March 1st, the district held its 23rd annual district meeting. Calvary Community Church in Fullerton, CA. hosted the event this year.

Friday evening was a time of worship and fellowship. After a time of singing, each church in the district gave reports of praise and prayer regarding the issues they are facing. It was so exciting to hear about the continued progress being made at The Rock, (Chandler) still a "new" on-campus work reaching young adults. We were also thankful to hear about the ministry that Pastor Forrest and Julie have given to the Living Word community of believers. We pray that the Lord will guide Living Word in their search for another pastor.

Pastor Jim (left) reported on the work at Fullerton (see additional pictures below), and the ongoing ministries there. Pastor Terry (Yuma) gave an exciting report on the many avenues of outreach his church has had over the past year. The new church building is near completion and we await the news of the dedication of their new building.

District gatherings provide an excellent opportunity to share with each other some of the joys and concerns from our churches.

On Saturday morning, Dr. Jonathan Lunde, professor at Biola and Talbot School of Theology, gave a teaching seminar on Discipleship in the New Covenant. The first hour he discussed the nature of a covenant and its demands. The two underlying questions that were answered during the seminar were: "Because I've been saved by grace, why should I be concerned to obey Jesus' commands when He has fulfilled the law for me?" Secondly, "How can I obey Jesus' commands without becoming weighed down by legalism?"

One truth that was stated loudly and clearly was that God desires His people to be a righteous people who reflect His righteous character. God's grace is indeed very deep--but that does not diminish His demands of rightousness in His children. The world is NOT seeing Jesus in us, we should allow God's character to tranform us.

During the morning break, the women that were present at the district meeting gathered at the parsonage for an informal meeting.

The district president, Delvina, gave a brief update of the plans for the PSW District Women's retreat coming in April.

Some ladies also participated in a skit advertising the upcoming retreat. President Steve led the business sessions following Dr Lunde's seminar. Our district has been richly blessed by the presence of our African pastors Jean Mberebe (above) and Blaise Beboua and his wife Barbara. Their insight and wisdom are appreciated.
We had a unique situation at this particular conference. Eleven of the people in attendance had spent time in Africa (one third of the attendees)! The above three adults (plus Forrest, who had already left) grew up in Africa as missionary children. Missionary Kids (MK's) have a special bond that lasts forever.
Meanwhile at Calvary, over in the main sanctuary, Kevin was hard at work replacing the carpet in the church entryway. After tearing out the old carpet and cleaning off the floor, he and his crew were ready to lay the new flooring.

Women's Retreat 2008

On April 11-13 the women of our district gathered together at the Pine Valley Bible Conference Center for their annual women's retreat. Set back in the mountains, the setting was rustic and relaxing. There was plenty of time for renewing friendships and making new friends, for hiking and also horseback riding, for playing games, for praying and singing, and for being nurtured from the Word of God.

Some of the ladies traveled many hours to come to the retreat, others had a shorter drive.
This proved to be one of the places of great memories! In this building, the women enjoyed delicious food and wonderful fellowship. At every meal, the ladies were treated to a fun little favor that co-ordinated with the weekend theme "Walk As Jesus Walked."There was even a cute little coffee shop ("Altitude") that was open early in the morning for those ladies who needed that jolt of java upon awakening.The women spent many hours in this building as they sang and prayed together, and listened to the teaching on the theme "Walk As Jesus Walked" from Mark 4. The guest speaker for the weekend was Casey Baardson. She challenged us to get to know Jesus intimately so that we can walk as He walked--to read and study the Word of God, to sit under the preaching and teaching of the Word so that we will be able to discern God's will for our lives.

Fear can often paralize us, but we were reminded once again that God only calls us to do something that He can do through us. Walking with Jesus is a step by step journey; He goes before us and never asks us to go where He has not already been.

Ruth Vallevik (left), the director of National Women's Ministries, also spoke at the retreat. She presented a seminar on developing women for leadership, and gave the women a report on the activities of women's ministries at the national level.Casey told the women, "God meets you right where you are, because He loves you and wants to lead you. He sees beyond your circumstances and wants to astound you with what He wants to do through you!"

Prayer partners for the coming year were chosen, and the women paired off and enjoyed a time of intercessory prayer for each other.

This year, the women elected a new president, Judy Paulson (left), and celebrated the wonderful service that the outgoing president, Delvina, had given to the district.

On Friday evening, the ladies enjoyed a time of fun at the "Pajama and Slipper Party."

Some of the slippers were quite creative!

Others were quite practical... It was all part of the theme of "walking."

All of the churches brought items for the silent auction to raise money for women's ministries. This project was very successful, and not only was a good amount of money raised, but many women went home as "happy shoppers!"

Of course, no retreat is complete without laughter and fun! On Saturday evening each church group presented a skit.

Laughter is good medicine for all of us, and the women certainly enjoyed exercising their "smiling" muscles during this night of fun!

On Sunday morning, the whole group participated in a drama of scripture and song that was written and directed by Ruth entitled "Faithwalk." The christian can be hindered in his/her relationship to God by many obstacles: our natural blindness, our own reason, our dull hearing, our will, fatigue and time pressure, our sins...

...fears, false teachers, lack of knowledge, distractions. But if we will let Him, Jesus tenderly comes alongside us to open our eyes and ears to give us understanding; He carries our burdens, cleanses us from sin; teaches us the truth (by His Word), calms our fears and walks lovingly beside us all the way to eternity.

There were forty-three women in attendance at this year's event. Now, everyone start planning and saving for next year!

We rejoice with Victoria CC in Rancho Cucamonga on the installation of their new pastor, Erick Sorensen. We pray God's blessings on him and his family as they begin their ministry. Erick will be joining the four other LB pastors in California as they meet every month to pray and encourage each other in their work.

Annual Convention 2007

The Church of the Lutheran Brethren annual convention this year was held at Marysville Word of Life Church on June 17th-June 20th.

The theme for the convention was "Thy Kingdom Come."

The first evening, our church president Joel Egge spoke from Mark 1:14-15. He talked about how perplexing, yet amazing God's kingdom is. He emphasized the facts that when God's kingdom comes to us it 1) calls us to repentance from sin, and 2) it comes at just the right moment.

As we closed the opening service, the worship leader, Micah Nordtvedt, together with the worship band, led us in singing "The Lord's Prayer." Joining our hands and praising the Lord in this manner moved many in the congregation to tears, and seemed to set the tone of a unified spirit that continued to reign throughout the coming days of prayer, worship and communion, business deliberation, and decision-making.

On Monday morning, the Church of the Lutheran Brethren voted to accept a new church into membership- the Grace Community Church in Wesley Chapel, Florida. Pastor Jeff Olsen and his family have been serving there for the past couple years and have witnessed the hand of God as they have seen their numbers grow and people commit themselves to serving the risen Lord.

As a district, we also rejoice in the news that one of our own churches, RockChurch in Chandler, Arizona, has become self-supporting and will be going off financial subsidy this year. Unfortunately, their pastor, Forrest Erickson , was unable to attend the convention due to illness. We pray for God's healing and for a speedy recovery.

On Monday evening, before Pastor Thor Foss (Succasunna, NJ) spoke, a commissioning service was held for our missionaries leaving this fall. Steve and Janice Flude, (the couple on the left)together with their family of nine children, will be leaving in September for nine months of language study in France before they begin their ministry in Chad.

Linda Low (on right) will be leaving in August to begin her two-year ministry of teaching the Venberg children in Doh, Chad. We continue to praise God for His call to these servants of His, and pray for their protection, wisdom for their studies, and grace as they adapt to new cultures and situations. The Flude family

We rejoice in the task that God has given to us as a church body and pray for His guidance as we seek to do this work. Our desire, as a church synod, and as a district, is that people everywhere be brought into God's kingdom of saving, sustaining and strengthening grace.

Convention 2007--Marysville, WA

On Saturday, June 16th women from many different LB congregations gathered together in the beautiful Marysville Word of Life Church for their annual women's convention.

Our theme for the convention this year was "Come, Now is the Time... to Worship, to Witness, to Serve.

We enjoyed a wonderful time of worshipful singing, held our business meeting, heard updates from several missionaries--both at home and abroad, enjoyed a time of prayer, and were blessed by the wit and Godly wisdom of our special speaker Rhea Briscoe.

After a lovely noon luncheon, the ladies were offered several options for seminars: on leadership, personal spiritual growth, broadening our vision, teaming up and edifying one another, and bridging the generation gap.

All in all, in was a wonderful and beneficial day. Besides, it was a great time of re-newing friendships, and making many new friends! For more info please go to www.wmclb.com

Living Word Youth Group Outing

Calvary CC has the unique privilege of being located close to many fun attractions for kids. So this past weekend, several adults from Living Word (our church in Phoenix) brought eleven of their young people from the junior high group to Fullerton, California. After a long road trip on Saturday, the group settled into their new "quarters," the upstairs Sunday school rooms at Calvary. (Or, as one young lady called it "the church/motel")

Sleeping conditions at the "church/motel" were rather simple. The kids were tough and just rolled out their sleeping bags and slept on the floor...

...the adults, on the other hand, really wanted a good night of sleep, so they came with sleeping bags AND air mattresses!

On Sunday, the youth group joined the Calvary worshippers for the morning service, and also sang a special number for the congregation.
The afternoon was a time for them to kick back and relax, so the group travelled to a local beach to soak up the California sun and waves.
On Monday, with perfect weather, the whole group spent the entire day at Knott's Berry Farm. (Hopefully, more pictures of that fun time will be posted.) A very tired group of kids and adults crawled into their sleeping bags that night-- completely exhausted--but very happy!

In the cool mist of Tuesday morning, everyone packed up their belongings and loaded the cars for the long trip back to Phoenix.
This is the second time that some of the adults in the group have participated in this type of outing. They are encouraged as they see the young people draw closer to each other during the weekend, and also have the opportunity to experience God's blessing in their lives.
Calvary CC also benefitted from the presence of these friends from Arizona. It gives the people from our different churches a chance once again to experience the bond that we have in Christ, and to profit from the encouragement that we can give to each other in the Lord's work. Hopefully there can be further opportunities to foster community within our district.

The Truth Project Seminar

A few weeks ago three couples from Calvary CC attended the introductory seminar on the Truth Project. For those of you that are unfamiliar with this conference, please check out their site at http://thetruthproject.org
The Biblically-based lessons are well presented and so relevant for the culture that we are living in. Now we are prayfully considering our next step--small group study.

The two-day regional Truth Project event was worth every minute of our time, and the teacher Dr. Del Tackett, was awesome!

A Summer Invitation

PSW Women's Retreat 2007

This past weekend, a group of women from five different churches in our district, met together in Yuma, Arizona at the beautiful Western Inn Suites. The theme for our retreat this year was "Listen and Follow: go for the Goal!" We were blessed with warm, sunny weather (after the first evening of wind and rain) and nice accomodations.
Most of the activities took place in the "Palm Conference" room (notice the french doors). We were spoiled with good food, wonderful treats, and the privacy we needed for our meetings. Because the motel was a series of buildings designed around the pool-restaurant area, it took some of us awhile (and a few wrong turns onto dead-end balconies) before we managed to find our way around the place! The motel was in a good location, right across from a shopping mall and close to the freeways.

Our speaker for this retreat was the very talented Shirley Peters (on the left). She is the former Dean of Women at San Diego Christian College and presently does public speaking and writes for Quiet Time Ministries in Palm Springs. Karen, (right) one of our visitors, recently moved to the Yuma area where her husband serves as a military chaplain.
All of the women present at the retreat were fed spiritually as Shirley spoke from her heart about many of the things that God has taught her- through His Word as she listens, and through life experiences as she follows Him. What a blessing for all of us to be taught some of her secrets of studying God's Word!
In the first session, we learned that God's Word is the basis for all truth, and the best way to "follow and listen" our Lord is through the study of His Word. Shirley told us that we should never think of our Bible study as "preparing a lesson, but as a meeting with Jesus!"
In the following session, we learned, from the biblical example of Daniel, the importance of establishing our identity in Christ, so that we will remain faithful to Him in all situations, and to finish "strong" in the race of life.
Finally, Shirley shared from Psalm 23. We were exhorted to never let our ears grow dull to the Shepherd's voice. Jesus, our Good Shepherd, wants us to listen to Him and follow closely.

We were privileged to have these ladies from the Yuma church lead us in worshipping our Lord through music.

We were excited to have several women, both young and old, from the churches represented. From the Pasadena church, these are the ladies, together with our speaker, who attended.

Many women brought craft projects and other items for the silent auction.
It was fun to watch the competion as the prices for the items climbed. The auction closed on Saturday afternoon. Thanks to God, we were able to raise a good sum of money to be used for missions and ministry.( Some people even had to finish up their projects before placing them on the table!)

On Saturday evening, a couple of the churches presented skits. The women from Living Word Church in Phoenix, performed a humorous re-enactment of their trip to the retreat, concluding with the question, "and we might have to travel 300 hundred miles next year?!!"
The Pasadena ladies presented a humorous but thought-provoking skit about life lessons we can learn from snails: keep on moving, and watch what you ingest!

California pastors fellowship

Every month, the LB pastors in SoCal try to meet together at a local restaurant for a time of sharing, prayer, and encouragement. Over breakfast, they discuss their work, sermons, and other issues dear to their hearts, and seek to encourage and build each other up.
Unfortunately, Jean Mberebe was unable to join the men today, but (L to R) Blaise Beboua, Steve Lazicki, Jim Erickson, and Ron Sunwall met together this morning.

Calvary Community Church (Fullerton, CA)

We, at Calvary CC, were excited to present the Easter message of our risen Lord last Sunday. It was exciting as a new pastor here, to see many more pews filled and to dream of the potential that only God, Himself can provide. Pastor Jim's message "The Living One" was a challenge to all of us--why do we (like the women who went to the empty tomb) continue to look for life itself among the dead and decaying? We were asked once again to REMEMBER the words of Jesus!
Continue to pray with us that the Word of God would bear much fruit- both in the hearts of those who are followers of Jesus, and those who still do not know Him as Savior. Pastor Jim speaks on Easter Sunday.

We rent our facilities to three other local church groups: Cornerstone Christian Fellowship (a Filipino church), Monte Horeb (a Hispanic church, whose pastor and family also live on our campus), and Yae Chan (a Korean church). Sometimes trying to juggle the activities of four different church groups becomes difficult for our secretary Dolores, but she does a great job of coordinating everything. The pastors from all four churches meet together every other month to pray and share concerns with each other. We are so thankful for the body of Christ and the beauty of different cultures worshipping and sharing together. Pray that these bonds would be strengthened.

Another important ministry of our church is the "Feed the Hungry" outreach that we provide each month. Many of our people are involved in preparing food, visiting with the homeless people that come to eat, and also donating and distributing clothing and food to the needy that come. God has certainly opened our eyes to the hurting world right here at our door. Pray that God would always keep our hearts tender toward "the least of these."

The women gather in the PSW

On February 23-24, the women who attended the district meeting in Yuma, AZ gathered together to hear an update from our district president Delvina Simonson. (front row, second from left) All the women were asked to encourage their church groups to attend the upcoming events: leadership conference and also the district retreat. We were also blessed by encouraging words from Mabel Helland (back row, center) who was visiting from Minnesota.
On March 17th, about 30 women attended the WMCLB Leadership Conference held at Calvary in Fullerton. The speakers included: (L to R) Marilyn Erickson, Janet Spencer, and Ruth Vallevik. Chloe Koslowski was the conference leader.
The women all enjoyed a good time of food, fellowship, and teaching.
